Marschall Smith

Marschall Smith has spent 35 years as a corporate lawyer with an emphasis on mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance and corporate governance. He was senior vice president and general counsel of Archer Daniels Midland Co., 3M Company and Brunswick Corporation.


In addition to his legal assignments, Marschall was President and CEO of I&A International Inc. and Medcom Corporation, two privately held corporations with extensive international operations. Finally, he was Executive Vice President- Corporate Development for DIGITAS Inc, a pioneer in on-line marketing.


A native Texan, Marschall served ten years as a Marine Corps officer, including four years of active duty with combat service in Vietnam. He left the Marines with the rank of major. He was a member of the Carter Mondale presidential transition team and served a special assistant to the Director Designate of Central Intelligence. Marschall began his legal career in New York with the firm of Debevoise & Pimpton.

He holds a AB cum laude from Princeton, a JD from the University of Virginia and an MBA from the University of Chicago. He is the father of five grown children (including two lawyers) and seven grandchildren. Marschall and his wife Debra, a university professor and author, currently reside in Minnesota
